The side that crushes should face the pan. If you’re using a flash hider that is symmetrical you don’t necessarily have to put a crush washer on it because by design the flash hider isn’t trying to divert gas in any particular direction. Yamaha uses crush washers which start crushing at perhaps 15-17 ft. lbs. Once it starts crushing any further tightening is just turning into a flat washer.
